Choosing the Right shock Treatment

Q: My water is green. What should I do?
A: First, make sure that your pump and filter are working correctly. The return pressure should be clear and forceful. Test the pH of the water. Chlorine becomes more effective at low pH levels. 6.8-7.4 will be best. Set the filter dial to “recirculate” or remove the cartridge. This will allow maximum circulation. At night, add 2 lbs of Yellow Out per 10,000 gallons of water. Immediately after, add 4 lbs of chlorine shock per 10,000 gallons of water. These two chemicals react to form bromine. The next morning, you should brush down the sides of the walls to get algae in suspension. Add 1 Qt. Poly 60 Algaecide per 10,000 gallons. Insert cartridge or set filter dial to “filter.” Add 4 oz Super Clarifier per 10,000 gallons. This will coagulate the algae into clumps that will be filtered out. Run filter for 48 hours, backwashing as necessary.

Q: I have stains on my liner. Help!
A: First, fill an old sock with sodium bisulfate (pH Minus). Tie it up and place it over the stained area. Wait 5-10 minutes. If there’s any improvement under the sock, you have a metal stain. If the test does nothing, it’s either algae or some form of bacteria. For metal stains, lower the chlorine level to zero. Lower the pH to 6.8-7.4. Use the Jack’s Magic Stain Identification Kit to determine which stain removal product will work best. For algae/bacteria stains, add 2 lbs of Yellow Out per 10,000 gallons and 4 lbs of chlorinated shock treatment directly over the infected area. Vacuum to waste.

Q: My water is cloudy. What should I do?
A: First, make sure that your pump and filter are working correctly. The return pressure should be clear and forceful. Incorrect water balance is usually the culprit. The alkalinity should be 80-120 ppm. If it’s low, add Alkalinity up. The pH should be 7.2-7.6. Use pH Plus/Minus as needed. The calcium hardness should be 200-400 ppm. Add Calcium Booster if needed. Test for free and total chlorine. If there’s a difference of 0.2ppm or greater between these levels, the pool should be shocked. After balancing the water, add 4 oz Super Clarifier per 10,000 gallons. This should coagulate any suspended particles. Run the filter for 48 hours. If water is still cloudy, as a last resort raise the pH to 8.0-8.4 range and apply 2 lbs of Flock (Aluminum Sulfate) per 10,000 gallons. Leave filter off for 24 hours to allow debris to settle. Vacuum slowly to waste.
