| What
is OZONE? |
|
- Ozone
is "Active Oxygen", natures special
molecule (an ozone molecule consists of three
oxygen atoms.
- Ozone
is created in nature by the combination of oxygen
in the air and ultraviolet rays or by the electrical
discharge during a lightning storm.
- Ozone
is a natural purifier (meaning no harmful chemical
by-products are created during purification.
- Ozone
has a clean, fresh scent noticed after a rain
storm.
- Ozone
is the most powerful oxidizer that can be safely
used in a swimming pool or spa.
- Ozone
is the alternative water purifier to traditional
pool/spa chemicals such as chlorine and bromine.
|
| OZONE
is Healthy and Safe! |
|
Ozone
is healthy:
- Ozone
leaves no chemical by-products in water - it
converts into life giving oxygen.
- Ozone
leaves no chemical taste or smell.
- Ozone
will not irritate or dry out skin, nose, or
ears.
- Ozone
will not leave a chemical film on material or
skin.
- Ozone
will not discolor or damage hair or clothing.
- Ozone
rids water and air of disease-causing microorganisms.
- Ozone
is NOT a carcinogen.
|
Ozone
is safe:
- Ozone
is safe for the environment and pool/spa equipment.
- Ozone
cannot explode.
- Ozone
is not a fire hazard in the doses required for
excellent water purification.
- Ozone,
when used properly, does not produce harmful
fumes.
- Pool
and spa manufacturers recommend the use of ozone
because it is so gentle on their equipment.
|
| OZONE
is Convenient! |
|
- Ozone
does not need to be purchased or stored. Ozone
is generated on-site and is introduced into
the water automatically.
- Ozone
does not affect the pH balance of the water,
thus minimizing pH adjustments.
- Ozone
helps reduce total dissolved solids in the water.
- Ozone
eliminates much of the routine maintenance because
it does such an effective job of keeping the
water clean. it does this by:
- Oxidizing
oils and other organic compounds which make
the "ring" around the pool have
a harder time adhering.
- It
actually removes particles from the water
(moving it closer to its natural state)
without having to add more chemicals .
- MAKES
MORE FREE CHLORINE AVAILABLE TO SANITIZE,
Frequently
Asked Questions |
|
|
| 1.
How do I know if an ozonator is working? |
|
Look
for a green light on the front of the unit for
DELZONE Eclipse models.
|
| 2.
What does ozone do? |
|
Ozone
is a strong sanitizer that oxidizes substance
in a swimming pool or spa (up to 3000 times)
quicker than chlorine. Ozone is usually the
primary sanitizer but still requires a residual
algaecide (chlorine, bromine, mineral or salt
type system). Ozone does NOT eliminate the need
for an algaecide.
|
| 3.
Why is the water cloudy when first starting the
ozonator? |
|
When
ozone is first introduced into a pool for the
first time, a process called micro-flocculation
occurs. This process enables the oxidized matter
in the pool to form long molecular chains which
are removed by the pool's filter. These chains
create cloudy water and can take up to a week
to filter out based on local water chemistries.
|
| 4.
Is ozone smog? |
|
No.
Ozone is not smog and is safe for use in pool
and spa water. "Smog" is air pollution
created by combustion polluters. While smog
contains small amounts of ozone, it is largely
composed of harmful chemicals such as carbon
monoxide. In fact, smog and other pollutants
may contribute to the damage of the ozone layer.
|
| 5.
If I use ozone in my pool or spa, will I help replenish
the Ozone Layer? |
|
No.
Because ozone reacts so quickly with contaminants
in water and air, it converts back to oxygen
within minutes or even seconds. Any ozone molecules
that break free from the pool or spa water will
convert to oxygen and never reach the atmosphere.
|
| 6.
Will Ozone hurt me? |
|
No!
In the quantities necessary to be effective,
ozone is very gentle to humans and equipment
in the water. However, you should never breathe
concentrated ozone gas.
|
| 7.
Does Ozone have an odor? |
|
Yes,
depending on concentration, the odor ranges
from slightly sweet to moderately antiseptic.
|
| 8.
Will Ozone kill bacteria? |
|
Yes,
it is one of the most effective, complete bactericides
of all earth's measurable elements.
|
| 9.
Will Ozone kill Viruses? |
|
Yes,
Ozone kills virtually all known forms of viruses
in water and air.
|
| 10.
How is ozone different from chlorine. |
|
In
the quantities needed for water purification,
it has no noticeable odor, taste or color. It
is not irritating to humans or equipment. Ozone
purifies water and air very quickly and efficiently,
3,000 times faster than chlorine. Ozone leaves
no by-products except pure oxygen. In contrast,
chlorine leaves a chemical by-product called
hypochloric acid and additional salts in water
applications.

How does Corona Discharge Ozone Generation Work?
|
|
Ozone
is produced by passing air through a high voltage
electrical discharge, or corona. A minimum of
5,000 volts of electricity is necessary to create
the corona. Air or concentrated oxygen dried
to a minimum of -60°C dew point passes through
the corona which causes the O2 bond to split,
freeing two O1 atoms which collide with other
Ox molecules to create ozone. The ozone/gas
mixture discharged from the CD ozone generator
normally contains 1% to 3% ozone when using
dry air, and from 3% to 6% ozone when using
high purity oxygen as the feed gas.
|
| OZONE
and Chemicals |
|
We
have found, over the past 10 years, any ozonated
system still needs a small residual algaecide
or oxidizer to effectively kill algae. Ozone
is used as both an oxidizer and sanitizer but
lacks the residual of other sanitizers since
its half-life is around 22 minutes in water.
Ozone, in the quantities needed for killing
algae in the pool, would be cost prohibitive
to the consumer.
Recommended
Chlorine/Bromine level: 0.5 to 1 PPM
Ozone
works well in conjunction with both chlorine
and bromine oxidation systems. Ozone helps
keep the free chlorine working and eliminates
foul smelling and irritating chloramines.
Fact:
Chlorine at 0.5 PPM in a swimming pool (low
end of DEL's recommended free chlorine range)
is less concentrated than many municipal
drinking water limits? Ozone rids water
of chloramines, the usual suspect in "chlorine"
allergies. |
Ozone
and Salt Chlorinators.
DEL's
automated Eclipse ozone generators and salt
chlorinators work well together. Salt chlorinators
typically work by providing a steady rate of
chlorine into pools. When pool bather load or
high amounts of contaminants are present, the
salt chlorinator adjusts the chlorine output
so that enough chlorine residual is left in
the water. When an ozone generator is introduced
into the pool system, the salt chlorinator does
not realize a high load because the ozone is
oxidizing the contaminants in the pool. The
result? Reduced salt generator consumption/maintenance
and clearer, cleaner and healthier pool water.
Ozone
and Mineral Algaecide systems:
The
mineral system will act as a backup algaecide
and bactericide. It will insure that the water
is always clean in case one of the other systems
goes out (i.e. you forget to add chlorine or
your ozone system is not operating). The use
of the mineral system with ozone will further
support the use of minimal levels or residual
chlorine.
Using
ozone along with a chlorine/mineral system will
make for the healthiest possible swimming environment
that still feels like it is "chemical free."
The water will be completely clear and sanitary
without turning our hair green and bleaching
your swimsuit. Chlorine levels are kept to a
minimum (similar to tap water chlorine levels),
chloramines are eliminated, and algae growth
inhibited. This is swimming the way it is meant
to be!
Ozone
used in conjunction with mineral systems helps
prevent scaling and reduces consumable usage.
pH
and Ozone:
Ozone
is pH neutral in your swimming pool or spa.
When ozone is used as the primary sanitizer
residual algaecides (i.e. chlorine, bromine
or salt systems) are greatly reduced from 60-90%.
It is readily known that chlorine, bromine or
other salt systems are not pH neutral. When
balancing your pool, you must add acidic or
basic chemicals to bring the pH levels back
to neutral. Note: When ozone is used as the
primary sanitizer, less pH balancing is required
because the amount of the residual algaecides
are reduced.
