Cartridge Filters, DE Filters, Sand Filters & Filter Supplies

Your filter system is 1 of the most important parts of your pool, key to a clean, safe and fun backyard oasis. It’s essential to get the perfect 1 for your pool. Choose from a sand filter, cartridge filter or a Diatomaceous Earth (DE) filter. Make sure you get the right size to filter your pool and look into proper maintenance for the filter, whatever type it is.

For more information and answers to any questions you have, check out the Buyer’s Guide and FAQ page about filters.

How Big Of A Filter Do I Need?

If you’re unsure of what your pool’s volume is here’s a quick formula you can use:

Length x Width x Average Depth x Multiplier = Volume in Gallons

  • Multiplier for rectangular and square pools is 7.5
  • Multiplier for oval pools is 6.7
  • Multiplier for round pools is 5.9

Note: All measurements should be in feet, including the depth. For above ground pools, assume that the water depth is 6” less than the wall height, so if your pool is 48”, assume the depth is 3.5’, and for 52” pool, use 4’.

If math isn’t for you, take a look of the chart below featuring common pool sizes and how many gallons of water each size holds.

If you can’t remember the HP of your pump and its flow rate, you should be able to find this information on the pump. If not, base your filter choice on the size of your pool.

What Would Happen If I Got A Filter Too Small For My Pool?

Opting for a filter that is smaller than the recommended size for your pool would result in prolonged cleaning and sanitization processes. Not only would a smaller filter consume a significant amount of time to clean your pool, but it would also put excessive strain on your pump. Since the pump and filter work in conjunction, a lack of synchronization can have a detrimental impact on your entire system.

Is There A Way To Make My Sand Filter More Effective?

A conventional sand filter can only filter particles as small as 20 microns, but this capability can be improved by utilizing appropriate equipment. There are various additives and replacement parts available that can enhance the performance of sand filters. Some of these options include Luster Filter Media, Zeo-Clear Swimming Pool Sand Filter Alternative, and Filter Glass.
