How Do I Tell What Kind Of Stain It Is?

Start by looking at the color. This is an easy way to get an idea of what kind of stain it is. We’ve included a chart to help you match the color to the stain’s culprit:

How Can I Get Rid Of A Stain?

No matter what type of stain you have, the first step is to test your water and check your balance. If your water is not balanced, it will be more difficult to remove the stain.

For Organic Stains: Once your water is balanced, super shock your pool with calcium hypochlorite. Once the shock has circulated for a few hours, apply granular chlorine to the stain and scrub it away.
For Metal/Mineral Stains: Use a stain remover designed to remove stains caused by that specific metal or mineral. Follow the instructions on the label carefully.
For Scale Stains: There are a few ways to remove scale. The easiest method is to purchase a calcium stain remover and add it to the water, or apply it directly to the stain. For scale on tile, you can use a stain eraser or a pumice stone to scrub the area.

Do I Need To Drain My Pool To Use Stain Remover?

Most stain removers do not require you to drain your pool. However, if your staining is more severe or your first course of treatment has not removed the stain, you may need to drain your pool to gain easier access to the stain. Here are some additional tips for removing stains from your pool:

Keep your pool clean and balanced. This will help prevent stains from forming in the first place.
Use a pool cover when you are not using your pool. This will help to keep debris out of the water and prevent stains from forming.
Have your pool professionally cleaned and maintained regularly. This will help to remove any stains that may have formed and prevent new stains from forming.
