Ozone (O₃), also known as active oxygen, is a naturally occurring element. Just as the ozone in the earth's atmosphere protects us from the sun's harmful rays, ozone in your pool protects you from known microorganisms, including bacteria and viruses in the water.

Ozone is just like the air we breathe, but with an extra, unstable oxygen atom attached. Because the additional atom is held on by a very weak bond, the third oxygen atom non-selectively oxidizes any microorganism - including viruses, oils (suntan lotion; body oils), solids, and other contaminants in the water.
