Winter Pool Chemicals

Unfortunately, it’s starting to get to that time of the year again. Colder weather is on the horizon and before you know it, it's going to be time to start planning on closing your pool for the winter. Winterizing your pool the right way can save you a lot of time and hundreds or thousands of dollars when you go to open your pool in the spring. The last thing you're going to want to see in the spring is a filthy pool. It could require weeks of treatment just to get it in a condition that's suitable for swimming. Our closing kits along with this blog and video will help guide you to winterize your pool the right way!

Materials Needed:

Steps:

  1. Vacuum/Clean your pool to get rid of any debris
  2. Make sure that your pools pH and alkalinity levels are both stabilized before you begin the winterizing process
  3. Drain pool water
    • The amount of water you drain from your pool will be dependent on the climate you live in. The warmer the weather, the less it will need to be drained. However, no matter where you live, your pool should never be emptied and the water should always be drained at least 4-6 inches below the skimmer mouth.
  4. Blow out and plug up the pipes
    • If you take away anything from this blog it should be to completely blow out your pipes. Failing to do so, will allow the water to freeze inside the pipes, which will do some pretty costly damage. This is something you and your wallet will never want to deal with.
  5. Fill the bucket ¾ of the way up with water
  6. Grab the bag of shock from your kit and carefully cut it open
  7. Slowly poor the shock into the bucket as you’re simultaneously stirring the water
  8. Once completely dissolved, strategically poor around in your pool to help disperse the chemical
  9. Slosh around the water to make sure the chemical is distributed evenly throughout your pool
  10. Wait 15-20 minutes
  11. Repeat steps 5-9 with the algaecide
  12. Wait 15-20 minutes
  13. Repeat steps 5-9 again with the pH stabilizer

Since winterizing your pool will require the use of chemicals, it’s important to exercise complete caution. To help avoid any mishaps, when you’re mixing chemicals into the bucket, make sure that you're pouring the chemicals into the water and never the water on top of the chemical. After watching our video and following the provided steps, you should be good to go when you open your pool in the spring. Just remember, to open your pool clean, it must be closed clean!
