What is a BTU? A (BTU) is the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of water by 1 degree Fahrenheit. A gallon of water weighs 8.34 lbs. Example: A 24’ x 52” pool contains 14,960 gallons. 14,960 gallons weighs 124,766 lbs. Therefore a 124,766 BTU heater will raise a 24’round pool 1 degree every hour. A 406,000 BTU heater can raise the temperature 3.27 degrees per hour.
