How Do I Backwash My Sand Filter?

Backwashing your sand filter is an essential part of pool maintenance to keep your system running smoothly. Backwashing reverses the water flow to remove the contaminant buildup in your sand filter, and it’s a fairly simple process.

You should backwash your filter when the pressure gauge rises 8-10 PSI above it’s normal running pressure, or if you notice that you have a low pressure from your return jet.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to backwash your sand filter:

  1. Turn off your filter system and remove the skimmer basket. This is a good opportunity to rinse the basket out, too!
  2. Attach the backwash hose to the filter waste port (also known as the waste line or backwash port). Before continuing, ensure that the end of your backwash hose is in an appropriate spot, as it will soon have a lot of water flowing out of it!
  3. Before turning the filter system back on, turn your multiport valve to the “Backwash” position. Water should then start to flow out through the hose.
  4. Let the water run until it runs clear, which should take about a minute, depending on how dirty the filter is.
  5. Turn your filter system off and turn the water valve from Backwash to Rinse. This will help remove any sand from your lines before the water flows back into your pool, taking the sand with it.
  6. Turn the system back on and rinse for about thirty seconds.
  7. You can now run your system regularly.
  8. Remember to test your water! Since water has been removed from your pool, you may need to rebalance.

How Much Sand Do I Need For My Pool Filter?

It depends on your filter size, but it’s typically filled three-quarters full. Each listing should tell you exactly how much sand you need.

Is There Any Way To Make My Sand Filter More Efficient?

A conventional sand filter can only filter particles as small as 20 microns, but this capability can be improved by utilizing appropriate equipment. Various additives and replacement parts are available that can enhance the performance of sand filters. These options include Luster Filter Media, Zeo-Clear Swimming Pool Sand Filter Alternative, and Filter Glass.
