Water Bags & Blizzard Blocks

Buffalo Blizzard® Water Bags secure your inground pool winter cover during freezing temperatures and in harsh weather. They are best used with winter covers that have built in water bag loops and are constructed from high quality vinyl. Water bags should be filled ½ - ¾ full to allow room for water freezing expansion. They are designed to withstand freezing temperatures and treated with antibacterial & antifungal additives and UV inhibitors to prevent fading.

Or upgrade to Buffalo Blizzard® Blizzard Blocks, an alternative option to water bags that offers a more durable solution with its high-density polyethylene material. Simply fill ¾ of the block with water and snap on the top lid, when spring arrives take off the lid and tip the blocks to drain. The blocks can be used with any pool type and are infused with UV inhibitors that stop fading or cracking.

Tip: If you have trouble closing a water bag's valve, try soaking it in warm water.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are pool water bags used for?

Pool water bags are heavy-duty vinyl tubes placed around the edges of an inground pool cover to weigh them down. When they are filled ½ to ¾ with water, they both prevent strong winds from blowing the cover away, and keep debris from getting under the cover and into your pool.

How many water bags do I need for my winter cover?

We sell our waterbags in kits that correspond to the size of your pool, making buying the correct number of waterbags a breeze.

If we don’t have your pool’s size listed, simply take your pool’s perimeter (the length all away around the sides) and divide it by the length of the waterbags (either 4’ or 8’) to work out how many pool winter covers you need.

Should I use pool water bags or water blocks?

Using pool water bags or water blocks is up to your preference.

Whereas bricks or stone blocks are liable to damage your cover, water bags are made from a durable, heavy-duty vinyl that won’t scratch or tear your cover. Their main downside is their potential for leaks if they’re damaged, a downside which is partially fixed with double water bags. These bags are designed with two chambers, which not only prevents rolling, but if one chamber springs a leak it won’t empty the whole bag.

Winter Cover Blocks are similarly gentle on your cover, however are made from a stronger, thicker material than standard water bags, ensuring that they won’t spring a leak as easily. Their downside is that they have a more expensive initial start-up cost than water bags.

How do I fill and place water bags on a pool cover?

Place the empty water bags through the cover’s built-in loops or end-to-end along the perimeter. Fill each bag with a garden hose only ½ to ¾ full, allowing for room for ice expansion during freezing temperatures.

Do winter pool covers come with water bags?

Whereas we do sell some kits with water bags, we sell water bags separately so you can choose the best option to fit your needs.
